Over the past 5 years I’ve gone through several website designs, all of which did nothing for me (or my fans).

In the very beginning, I was so focuses on building my social media accounts (YouTube, Twitter, Facebook, Instagram) that I neglected my website for quite some time. Now I know that was dumb, and I should have been doing the opposite… having a nice functional website and building my email list.

My website was mainly for posting videos, writing articles about my new music and allowing people to contact me through the contact form. It was such a waste of ‘web space’. Did nothing for me… was a fantastic looking site though!

Anyway…

I knew that my website had the potential to provide more value to my fans and bring in more money from digital album sales than iTunes could.

You’ve seen it. That awesome email from your iTunes provider with the subject line “Your Royalty Payments.” The disappointment I would experience when I’d see a 0.07c statement was unbearable, I knew that something wasn’t right. Do you know what I’m talking about?

You start to question yourself.

You’re unsure if you’re good enough to keep doing music.

You quit playing music and then decide to give it another shot later in the week.

Honestly, I’ve probably quit being a musician over 20 times in 5 years, and I have a feelling you may have too!

I said, ok… it’s time to really focus and treat this like a professional business, so I did a shit-ton of research – called a million industry contacts and tried to make it happen.

This is also around the time that I started learning about online marketing and spending hours every single day researching, filling my brain with internet success stories and case studies.

A year later…

I finally found a WordPress Theme worth bragging about, and comes with more quality and valuable products than any other theme I’ve used before.

It’s by a company called “Elegant Themes“.

At first I thought they were more personal style blogs but then I looked into them a bit more and found that…

You can get 87 premium themes for the price of one PLUS complete access to all of their plugins!

My mind was blown. How did it take this long to know about this?

I had to convince myself that everything happens for a reason, and when the time is right – it will happen.

They also had a fantastic guarantee that said, “We honor all refund requests. If you are not happy then it’s our fault, plain and simple.”

I purchased the developer product for $89/year which includes all of the themes, plugins, technical support, you name it. I really liked the fact that you can cancel or upgrade your account anytime after signing up. Which means, if you don’t care about the continued support or updates you can get all of the themes and plugins for one cost and use it all you want!

Plus, when you consider the fact that most professional themes cost around $50 – $100, you can see it’s priced very fairly.

My FAVORITE plugin that they give you it called “Bloom”. It allows you to collect emails from you blog, or any page on your site. You can also embed an opt-in form to your posts, or even lock content so that readers have to opt-in to keep reading your valuable info (or listen to you awesome tunes).

Go and take a serious look at their page here:

Browse through the themes, plugins and testimonials to get a better understanding of what’s offered. You’re gonna love it.

NOTE: The theme you’re on right now is called “Divi”, by Elegant Themes.

Now, from one independent artist to another – I want to give you a tip that I WISH someone told me.

Build your site, then build your list.

If I had to do it all again, I wouldn’t start with social media… yeah, I would definitely put out a few videos and songs but I wouldn’t focus on that.

I would build my website, write an article about each video and create some sort of bundle to give to my fans for free in exchange for their email address.

Putting together 3 originals and giving it away as a free gift is one of the best things you can do. You’re fans will get to listen to some of your music, and you will be able to talk to them directly via email. How awesome is that? PLUS you don’t have to worry about dealing with social media bullshit where only 4-7% of your audience can see your posts. You can send emails to your fans about new videos, giveaways, sales and more – they’ll love it!

The only thing you’ll need is an account with MailerLite (which has no fee’s until you reach 1000 subscribers and they give you automation for free until that point!) Automation is what allows new subscribers to receive your free gift without you having to manually send it to them.
